Over the years I've made a number
of simplified “folk violas” with five strings. These
allow one to play both violin and viola without swapping instruments.
Simplifying the structure and decoration saves a lot of time and
keep the cost down. This one was a special order: instead of the
usual 15-1/2" or
16" body
length the customer wanted it to be 18" long. They also wanted
the “Viello” to have an end pin so that it could be played upright
like a 'cello. The instrument was no problem, but try to find a case!
In the end I made the case, too.
The instrument is black walnut and white spruce
with persimmon fittings and maple trim. The tuners are “Pegheds:” a
recent innovation that combines the look of “standard” pegs
with the advantages of gearing. Both the customer and I were pretty
impressed with them. |
